Canada Day & US Independence Day | Vegan Burger Patty

As fireworks light up the night sky and the smell of barbecues fills the air, two North American nations stand side by side, celebrating their values of freedom and independence. Canada and the United States with intertwined histories, reminisce their respective independence days with pride and unity. On 1st July, the Canadian people paint the towns and cities with red and white, holding the Canada flag, symbolizing their identity, whereas the United States on the other hand unfurls its star-spangled banner, rejoicing in the declaration that birthed a nation founded on liberty on 4th July.

Canada Day and American Independence Day, are two separate dates, yet one underlying sentiment: the love for their respective countries and the belief in the power of freedom. In this harmonious fusion of traditions, cultures intertwine, creating a tapestry that represents the enduring friendship between Canada and the United States. It is a time to cheer, applaud, and honor the sacrifices of those who fought for the freedom of the nations. So, why not celebrate this First and Fourth of July with loved ones and cook super-easy vegan traditional burgers? Here is the recipe for a perfectly delicious vegan burger patty.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Pride of India Whole White Garbanzo Beans (cooked, drained, and rinsed)
  • 1 cup Pride of India Split Yellow Mung Lentils (cooked, drained, and rinsed)
  • 1/4 cup Pride of India Coconut Flour (to help bind the mixture)
  • 1 tbsp Pride of India Garlic Ground
  • 1 tsp Pride of India Cumin Ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon Pride of India Black Pepper Ground
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • Oil for frying or baking

Directions

  • In a large mixing bowl, mash the cooked chickpeas (garbanzo beans) and mung beans together using a fork or potato masher. Leave some texture, but ensure they are well combined.
  • Add the chopped onion, garlic powder seasoning, ground cumin, chili powder (if using), salt, black pepper, and coconut flour. Mix everything thoroughly until all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  • Let the mixture sit for about 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together and for the coconut flour to absorb any excess moisture. If the mixture feels too wet, you can add more coconut flour gradually until you achieve a better consistency.
  • Shape the mixture into patties of your desired size and thickness. If needed, you can refrigerate the patties for about 15-30 minutes to help them firm up.
  • Heat some oil in a pan over medium heat. Cook the burger patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Alternatively, you can also bake them in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for approximately 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through. You can even use a burger press patty maker to prepare the patty.
  • Once cooked, serve the burger patties on vegan burger buns or hamburgers with your preferred burger seasoning, burger sauce and condiments.
